What is GIS Income Limits and Thresholds 2026?

GIS is extremely sensitive to income. The right threshold depends on whether you are single, part of a couple where both receive OAS, or part of a couple where only one spouse receives OAS.

Do I Qualify?

  • You must receive OAS first
  • You must live in Canada
  • Your income must stay below the threshold for your marital status
  • Different income types are treated differently, especially employment income exemptions

How Much Can I Get?

Single seniors have the highest possible monthly GIS amount when their countable income is very low. The benefit then falls as income rises, often at about a 50% reduction rate, with special rules in some ranges.

How to Apply

Apply through Service Canada once OAS is in place, then file taxes every year so GIS can renew and be recalculated correctly.
