What is Canada Workers Benefit for Self-Employed Workers?
Self-employed workers can qualify for CWB. CRA looks at net self-employment income, not simply gross business revenue.
Do I Qualify?
- You must meet the ordinary CWB age and residency rules
- You need enough net working income to pass the minimum threshold
- Gig, freelance, contract, and app-based work can count
- Income still has to stay below the phase-out limits
How Much Can I Get?
The CWB amount depends on your net working income and total family income. Higher eligible working income can increase the credit up to a point before the phase-out begins.
How to Apply
Report your self-employment income and expenses correctly on your tax return, then claim CWB through Schedule 6.

Does gig income count?
Yes. Delivery, rideshare, freelancing, and other gig income can count if it is reported as working income.
How is net income calculated?
Net self-employment income is what remains after eligible business expenses are deducted from gross business revenue.
Can I get CWB if I also have employment income?
Yes. Employment and self-employment income can both contribute to the working-income side of the CWB calculation.
