What is Ontario Trillium Benefit for Students?
Students can qualify for parts of OTB, but the result depends heavily on whether they live in residence, rent off campus, or live with parents.
Do I Qualify?
- You must be an Ontario resident filer
- Residence and off-campus rentals are treated differently
- OEPTC and OSTC have different age thresholds
- Having no tax owing does not prevent eligibility if you still file
How Much Can I Get?
Students in residence can face a flat and much smaller housing-related amount, while off-campus renters may qualify based on actual rent paid. The OSTC may still apply separately.
How to Apply
File your Ontario return and complete ON-BEN if your housing situation supports an OEPTC claim. Off-campus renters should keep rental records.

Does residence count as rent?
Residence is treated differently from ordinary off-campus rent. The tax treatment is usually more limited than a standard private rental.
What if I live at home?
If you do not pay qualifying rent or property tax, the housing-based OEPTC may not apply, though the OSTC might still apply.
Can I claim OTB if I have no income?
Possibly yes. Filing is still required, and low or zero income can still support benefit eligibility.
