What is Ontario Trillium Benefit?
The Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) combines three tax credits: the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit, the Northern Ontario Energy Credit, and the Ontario Sales Tax Credit.
Do I Qualify?
- You must be a resident of Ontario on December 31
- You must be at least 18 years old for the OEPTC/NOEC and generally 19+ for the OSTC
- You must file an Ontario income tax return
- Income thresholds and qualifying housing costs vary by component
How Much Can I Get?
The maximum combined benefit depends on which OTB components apply to you. Rent, property tax, Northern Ontario residency, age, and income all change the amount.
How to Apply
File your Ontario tax return and complete Form ON-BEN if you want the OEPTC or NOEC. The OSTC component is determined automatically from your return.

Do renters qualify for OTB?
Yes. Rent can be used to calculate the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit component, provided the housing situation qualifies and ON-BEN is completed.
Do I need ON-BEN to get OTB?
You need ON-BEN for the OEPTC and NOEC components. The Ontario Sales Tax Credit is automatic when you file your return.
Why did my Ontario Trillium Benefit not start in July?
If your return was filed or assessed too late, CRA may start your OTB later. Late filing is a common reason the first payment is delayed.
