Up to $1,283+/year
Official Government Page

What is Ontario Trillium Benefit for Renters?

Renters can qualify for the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit portion of OTB because the system uses rent as a proxy input in the calculation.

Do I Qualify?

  • You must be a resident of Ontario on December 31
  • You must file an Ontario return
  • You must complete ON-BEN if you want the OEPTC component
  • The property generally needs to be subject to municipal and education property tax rules for the claim to work normally

How Much Can I Get?

The amount depends on rent paid, age, marital status, and income. Rent does not mean you automatically receive the maximum, but it is a critical input in the calculation.

How to Apply

File your return and complete Form ON-BEN. Keep rent records even though receipts are not mailed in with the return.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much rent can I claim?

You generally report the rent you paid for your principal residence in Ontario during the tax year. CRA may later ask for support if reviewed.

What is Form ON-BEN?

ON-BEN is the Ontario form used to claim the OEPTC and NOEC components of the Ontario Trillium Benefit.

Does subsidized housing qualify?

It depends on the specific housing arrangement. Some social-housing situations do not support the same OEPTC claim outcome as ordinary market rent.
