What is OTB / OEPTC Without Rent Receipts?

You do not send rent receipts with your tax return, but you do need to keep evidence in case CRA reviews the claim later.

Do I Qualify?

  • You must otherwise qualify for OEPTC as an Ontario resident filer
  • Rent must relate to your principal residence in Ontario
  • The issue here is proof, not a different formula
  • Alternative records can become important if formal receipts are missing

How Much Can I Get?

The amount is still based on the usual OTB/OEPTC formula. Missing receipts do not change the formula, but they can create audit risk if CRA wants proof.

How to Apply

File normally with ON-BEN, then retain every available proof of rent such as the lease, bank statements, e-transfers, or messages showing payment history.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my landlord refuses to give receipts?

Ontario tenancy rules generally require rent receipts when requested. You should still keep other payment records in case of a dispute or CRA review.

Can I claim rent paid in cash?

Possibly, but documentation matters. Cash payments are much harder to support if CRA later reviews the claim.

What if I am audited?

CRA may ask you to prove the rent amount and housing details. The stronger your paper trail, the easier that review will be.
