Ontario Works Earnings Exemption

Up to $200/month exempt
Official Government Page

What is Ontario Works Earnings Exemption?

Ontario Works allows some employment income without a full dollar-for-dollar reduction, but the rules are much less generous than ODSP. The timing of the exemption is important because the first few months are treated differently.

Do I Qualify?

  • You must already be receiving Ontario Works
  • The standard earnings exemption normally starts after three consecutive months on the program
  • Before that point, work income is usually deducted more aggressively
  • You must report earnings to your caseworker as required

How Much Can I Get?

After the first three months, the first $200 of monthly earnings is exempt and only part of the income above that is deducted. During the first three months, employment income is usually deducted dollar-for-dollar.

How to Apply

There is no separate application. Report employment earnings consistently and Ontario Works should apply the correct treatment based on how long you have been on the program.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Ontario Works earnings exemption start?

It normally starts after you have been on Ontario Works for three consecutive months. Before that, earnings are generally deducted more strictly.

How much can I earn on Ontario Works?

After the waiting period, the first $200 per month is generally exempt and only part of the income above that is deducted, so working should still leave you somewhat better off.

How does this compare to ODSP?

ODSP is much more generous. It exempts the first $1,000 per month rather than only the first $200, which is one of the biggest practical differences between the two programs.
