ODSP 2026: Eligibility, Payment Amounts + How to Apply in Ontario

If you have a substantial disability that limits your ability to work or care for yourself, the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) provides monthly financial support, prescription drug coverage, and other benefits that go well beyond what Ontario Works offers. ODSP is one of the most important social safety nets in the province — but the application process can be lengthy and confusing. Understanding ODSP eligibility in 2026 requires knowing both the financial and disability requirements. This guide walks you through everything: who qualifies, how much you can receive, how to apply, and how ODSP interacts with other government benefits.

  • Income support — monthly payments for basic needs and shelter
  • Employment support — voluntary help with finding and keeping work
  • Benefits — prescription drugs, dental care, vision care, assistive devices, and more

Calculate My Benefits

ODSP is for Ontario residents with a significant physical or mental disability that is expected to last one year or more and substantially limits their ability to work, care for themselves, or participate in community life.

Who Qualifies for ODSP?

There are two types of eligibility requirements: financial and disability.

Financial Eligibility

Like Ontario Works, ODSP has a needs-based financial test:

Asset limits

SituationAllowable Liquid Assets
Single person$40,000
Couple$50,000
Each additional dependant+$500

Note: ODSP asset limits were increased significantly in 2023 (from $5,000/$7,500 to $40,000/$50,000). This is a major change that makes far more people financially eligible than before.

Exempt assets: Primary residence, one vehicle, RRSPs, RDSPs, RESPs, essential personal property, and prepaid funeral costs.

Disability Eligibility

You must have a substantial physical or mental impairment that:

  • Is continuous or recurrent and expected to last one year or more
  • Results in a substantial restriction in your ability to work, care for yourself, or participate in community life

The disability must be verified by a health professional (physician, psychologist, or other approved practitioner) using the Disability Determination Package (DDP).

Examples of conditions that may qualify

  • Chronic pain conditions (fibromyalgia, severe back injuries)
  • Mental health conditions (severe depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, PTSD)
  • Developmental disabilities
  • Physical disabilities (mobility impairments, paralysis)
  • Chronic illnesses (MS, HIV/AIDS, severe diabetes complications)

Brain injuries

The threshold is "substantial restriction," not total inability. You don't need to be completely unable to work. If your disability makes it very difficult to hold a job or care for yourself, you may qualify. The Disability Adjudication Unit reviews each case individually.

How to Apply for ODSP

Step 1: Apply for Financial Eligibility

Contact your local ODSP office (find it through ontario.ca or call 1-888-789-4199). They'll assess whether you meet the financial requirements (income and assets).

Step 2: Complete the Disability Determination Package (DDP)

If you're financially eligible, you'll receive the Disability Determination Package — a set of forms that must be completed by:

  • You (self-report section about how your disability affects daily life)
  • Your health care provider (medical section documenting your condition)
  • This is the most critical step. A clear, detailed medical report from your doctor is essential. Vague or incomplete forms are the most common reason for denial.

Step 3: Submit and Wait

The Disability Adjudication Unit (DAU) reviews your DDP. Processing times vary but typically take 3 to 6 months. During this time, you may receive Ontario Works as interim support if you're in financial need.

Step 4: Decision

If approved, ODSP payments begin. If denied, you have the right to:

  • Request an internal review within 30 days
  • Appeal to the Social Benefits Tribunal if the internal review upholds the denial

Tip: Many successful ODSP applications are initially denied and approved on appeal. If you believe you qualify, don't give up at the first denial. Consider contacting a community legal clinic for free help with appeals.

Earning Income While on ODSP

Like Ontario Works, you can work while on ODSP — and the rules are slightly more generous:

  • First $200/month of net employment income is fully exempt
  • After $200, 75% of additional net income is deducted from ODSP (you keep 25%)

Wait — ODSP deducts 75%? That seems harsh. But compare: on OW, the deduction is 50% after $200. ODSP has a higher base payment and the same $200 exemption, so the net effect depends on how much you earn. Example: You earn $1,000/month while on ODSP (single). First $200: exempt Remaining $800: 75% = $600 deducted from ODSP ODSP reduced by $600: $1,308 – $600 = $708 Your employment income kept: $200 + ($800 × 25%) = $400 Total income: $708 + $1,000 = $1,708/month (vs. $1,308 without working) Working adds $400/month to your total income in this scenario.

Real-Life Examples

Example 1 — Single Person With Mental Health Condition

Alex is 35 and lives in Ottawa. He has severe treatment-resistant depression and anxiety that make it very difficult to maintain employment. He was approved for ODSP after a 4-month application process.

Alex receives:

  • ODSP: $1,308/month (single, renting for $800 — shelter capped at $556)
  • GST/HST credit: $130/quarter ($43/month)
  • OTB: ~$95/month
  • Total: ~$1,446/month
  • Alex doesn't currently work but is exploring a part-time volunteer

Example 2 — Single Mother With Physical Disability

Priya is 40, a single mother with one child (age 8), and uses a wheelchair due to a spinal injury. She works 10 hours/week at a call centre, earning $800/month.

ODSP calculation

  • Base ODSP (single parent + 1 child): $1,813
  • Income deduction: ($800 – $200) × 75% = $450
  • ODSP after deduction: $1,813 – $450 = $1,363/month
  • Plus:
  • Employment income: $800
  • CCB: ~$550/month
  • GST/HST credit: ~$45/month
  • OTB: ~$80/month
  • Total monthly income: ~$2,838

Priya's situation shows how ODSP, employment income, and federal benefits can combine to provide a more livable income — but it still requires careful budgeting. How to Check CCB Eligibility 2026

FAQ

What's the difference between ODSP and the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)?+

The DTC is a federal tax credit that reduces your income tax and unlocks access to other federal benefits (RDSP, CWB disability supplement, Child Disability Benefit). ODSP is an Ontario provincial program providing monthly income support. They're completely separate — you can (and should) apply for both. Having the DTC does not automatically qualify you for ODSP, and vice versa.

Can I be on ODSP and receive CPP disability at the same time?+

Yes, but CPP-D is counted as income and will reduce your ODSP. However, in most cases you're still better off — the combination of CPP-D + reduced ODSP is usually higher than ODSP alone. Your ODSP office may require you to apply for CPP-D if you're eligible.

How long does ODSP last?+

As long as you remain eligible. There's no time limit. However, ODSP may conduct periodic reviews to confirm your disability still meets the criteria. If your condition improves significantly, you could be reassessed.

I was denied ODSP. What should I do?+

You have 30 days to request an internal review of the denial. If the internal review upholds the denial, you can appeal to the Social Benefits Tribunal within 30 days of the internal review decision. Many denials are overturned on appeal. Contact your local community legal clinic (free) for help with the process.

Can I own a home and receive ODSP?+

Yes. Your primary residence is exempt from the asset test. You can own your home and still receive ODSP as long as your liquid assets (cash, savings, investments) are within the allowed limits ($40,000 for singles, $50,000 for couples).
