Ontario Works Payment Dates 2026: Full Schedule + When Direct Deposits Hit
If you receive Ontario Works, you need to know exactly when your next payment lands — especially when every dollar is already accounted for. In 2026, a single person on OW receives $733 per month, and payments follow the same rule all year: they arrive on the last business day of the month before the month they cover.
This guide gives you the full 2026 OW schedule, current rates by family size, how direct deposits and payment cards work, what to do if a payment is late, and how other benefits like CCB and GST/HST credit stack on top of your OW amount.

Calculate My BenefitsOntario Works pays on the last business day of the prior month. That means your April cheque or deposit actually arrives on March 31, your May payment on April 30, and so on. Here is the full 2026 schedule:
| Month Covered | Payment Date | Day of Week |
|---|---|---|
| January 2026 | December 31, 2025 | Wednesday |
| February 2026 | January 30, 2026 | Friday |
| March 2026 | February 27, 2026 | Friday |
| April 2026 | March 31, 2026 | Tuesday |
| May 2026 | April 30, 2026 | Thursday |
| June 2026 | May 29, 2026 | Friday |
| July 2026 | June 30, 2026 | Tuesday |
| August 2026 | July 31, 2026 | Friday |
| September 2026 | August 31, 2026 | Monday |
| October 2026 | September 29, 2026 | Wednesday |
| November 2026 | October 30, 2026 | Friday |
| December 2026 | November 30, 2026 | Monday |
December note: The December 2026 payment (arriving November 30) may be issued a few days early if the payment date falls near a holiday. Check the MyBenefits portal or call your caseworker in mid-November to confirm.
Important: OW payments cover the following month. This is different from ODSP, which pays at the end of the current month. If you're switching between programs or comparing dates, this distinction matters — and it confuses a lot of people. For the full April calendar showing all benefit payments side by side, see our April 2026 benefit payments calendar.

Toronto vs. Province-Wide: Why January Is Different
If you live in the City of Toronto, your January 2026 payment arrived on December 22, 2025 — about 9 days earlier than the province-wide date of December 31. Toronto's municipal office processes the January payment earlier to help recipients cover expenses over the holiday period.
For every other month of 2026, Toronto and the rest of Ontario follow the same schedule. If you've recently moved into or out of Toronto, your payment timing may shift for one cycle — contact your caseworker to confirm.
Ontario Works Rates in 2026: How Much You Actually Get
OW has two parts: basic needs (for food, clothing, personal items) and shelter (for rent, utilities, mortgage). What you receive depends on your family type. These rates have been frozen since 2018 — they have not increased with inflation.
| Family Type | Basic Needs | Shelter (Max) | Total OW |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single person | $343 | $390 | $733 |
| Couple, no children | $494 | $642 | $1,136 |
| Single parent + 1 child | $360 | $642 | $1,002 |
| Couple + 1 child | $494 | $697 | $1,191 |
What about the Ontario Child Benefit (OCB)? If you have children, the OCB adds up to $140 per child per month on top of your OW payment. A single parent with one child receiving the full OCB would get $1,002 + $140 = $1,142 per month from OW and OCB combined — before counting federal benefits like CCB or the GST/HST credit.
Shelter allowance note: You receive the lower of your actual shelter costs or the maximum shown above. If your rent is $300, you get $300 for shelter — not the full $390. If you share housing and your portion of rent is low, your total OW payment will be lower than the maximums in this table.
For a detailed breakdown of how shelter is calculated, including what counts as eligible costs, see our ODSP shelter allowance guide — the same principles apply to OW, though the dollar amounts differ.
How OW Payments Are Delivered
Ontario Works offers three payment methods:
Direct deposit is the most common and fastest option. Funds typically appear in your account between midnight and 5:00 AM on the payment date. If you bank with a major institution (RBC, TD, BMO, Scotiabank, CIBC), deposits usually post by 1:00 AM. Credit unions and online banks may take until mid-morning.
Reloadable Payment Card is available for people who do not have a bank account. In Toronto, this is the RBC Right Pay™ Card. In the rest of Ontario, it is the Global Payment Card. You get 4 free ATM withdrawals per month at RBC ATMs (for the Right Pay card) or at designated ATMs (for the Global card). After that, standard ATM fees apply.
Cheque is the slowest option. Cheques are mailed several days before the payment date, but delivery can take 5 to 10 business days depending on Canada Post. If you rely on cheques and experience delays, switching to direct deposit or a payment card can help — speak to your caseworker.
What to Do If Your OW Payment Is Late
If your OW payment hasn't arrived by the expected date, here is what to do:
Step 1: Wait one full business day. Direct deposits occasionally process a few hours later than usual, especially on Mondays or after holidays.
Step 2: Log in to the MyBenefits portal to check your payment status. You can see whether a payment was issued and when it was sent.
Step 3: If the portal shows the payment was issued but it hasn't arrived, contact your caseworker or call one of these numbers:
| Contact | Number | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Social Assistance Support Line | 1-888-999-1142 | Mon–Fri, 8:30 AM – 5 PM ET |
| MyBenefits Technical Help | 1-888-999-6130 | Mon–Fri |
| IVR Automated Status Line | 1-800-808-2268 | 24/7 |
| TTY | 1-800-387-5559 | Mon–Fri |
If you use direct deposit and your bank has changed, update your banking information with your caseworker immediately — payments sent to a closed account can take weeks to redirect.
Can You Work While Receiving OW?
Yes. Ontario Works encourages employment, but how earnings affect your payment depends on how long you've been on the program.
First 3 months: All earnings are deducted dollar-for-dollar. If you earn $500, your OW drops by $500. You are no better off financially during this period — but you're building a work history.
After 3 months: You keep the first $200 per month with no deduction. Earnings above $200 are clawed back at 50% — meaning you keep half.
Quick example: You're single on OW ($733/month) and earn $500 in month 4. Your exemption is $200, so $300 is subject to clawback. Half of $300 = $150 deducted. Your OW payment becomes $583. Total income: $500 + $583 = $1,083 — that's $350 more than you'd receive without working.
The $200 exemption hasn't been increased since 2013. If it had kept pace with inflation, it would be roughly $267 today. Advocacy groups have pushed to raise it to $1,000 to match ODSP, but no changes have been announced for 2026.
For the full breakdown — including self-employment rules, training allowances, and a side-by-side comparison with ODSP's $1,000 exemption — read our OW earnings exemption guide.
What Other Benefits Stack with Ontario Works?
Ontario Works is not the only money you receive. Several federal and provincial benefits are fully exempt — they are not deducted from your OW payment. This is where the real picture of your total monthly income becomes clear.
| Benefit | Approximate Monthly Value | Exempt from OW? |
|---|---|---|
| Canada Child Benefit (CCB) | Up to $666.41/child (under 6) | Yes — fully exempt |
| GST/HST Credit (now CGEB) | ~$133/quarter (single) | Yes — fully exempt |
| Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) | Up to ~$269/month | Yes — fully exempt |
| Ontario Child Benefit (OCB) | Up to $140/child/month | Yes — fully exempt |
| Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) | Up to $200/month | Yes — fully exempt |
Real-world example — Maria, single parent with 1 child (age 4):
Maria lives in Peel Region and receives OW. Here's her total monthly income:
- OW payment: $1,002
- OCB: $140
- CCB (child under 6): ~$666
- GST/HST credit: ~$44/month equivalent
- OTB: ~$90/month equivalent
Maria's actual monthly income: approximately $1,942 — more than double her OW payment alone.

Asset Limits on OW
Ontario Works has asset limits that determine eligibility:
| Situation | Asset Limit |
|---|---|
| Single person | $10,000 |
| Couple | $15,000 |
Assets include savings, investments, and most property other than your primary residence and one vehicle. RRSPs, RDSPs, and RESPs are generally exempt. If you're close to the limit, speak with your caseworker before making changes — selling or liquidating assets near the threshold can create complications.
